Zlatograd

Zlatograd is a small town in the Rhodopes, located only 2 km from the border with Greece and 60 km southeast of Smolyan. In the heart of the city is the ethnographic area complex “Zlatograd” – an open-air museum, which is also part of everyday life of the city. The complex includes an ethnographic museum, craft workshops and an exhibition of water facilities. The tour of the complex starts from the museum so that the visitor can get acquainted with the history of the region before continuing. The museum has an archeological collection, an exposition that tells about the livelihood of the local population in the past, collections of costumes, jewelry and ritual inventory.

The tour continues with a visit to the craft workshops. Each of them is active and in front of the eyes of the visitors the experienced masters create products that can be bought. The Terzi (sewing) workshop introduces us to the traditions in this craft through interesting collections of old photos, sewing machines, irons, scissors and arshins. Here you can buy original costumes from all over the country. The machines for knitting braids can be seen in the braiding workshop. Braids are cords made of wool, which are used to decorate clothes.
